Self-storage facilities usually rent space on a short-term basis to individuals or to businesses. The storage units are typically window-less, made of metal and locked by the renter. Each unit is usually accessed by opening a metal door which is often about the same size as a one-car garage door. These units vary in size although common in the UK are ‘container units’ that can be used for shipping goods.
Modern self-storage facilities (in which the tenant has exclusive access to the storage space) did not begin to appear until the late 1960s. The first self-storage facility chains opened in Texas, storage facilities grew slowly through the 1990s, at which time demand outpaced supply and caused a rush of new self-storage developments. Today there are more than 54,000 self-storage facilities currently in existence in the U.S.
Self Storage did not arrive in the United Kingdom until the early 1980s, In 2014, FEDESSA, the Federation of European Self Storage Associations, published a report about the self-storage industry in Europe. In this report, it was estimated that 975 facilities exist in the United Kingdom and this today is growing in part is due to over 370,300 moving in Britain per year (2017 research). The Self Storage Association (SSA) UK estimates that there are now over 1500 self storage sites in the UK, more than a 50% increase in just four years, of which 345 facilities offer predominately container storage. Whether moving house, needing to make space to re-decorate or just requiring additional storage, introducing the 'new spare room', a self-storage unit.
Self storage isn’t just for the consumer though, peer behind the door of a unit, and you’re likely to find a budding entrepreneur, busily building a business empire. From online retailers to small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), over a third of the self storage space in the UK is used by businesses in some capacity – that’s a whopping 150,000 business customers.
